Shorter's 2 TDs lead John Hardin over Bullitt East

By

Robert Shorter rushed for two touchdowns to lead visiting John Hardin to a 24-6 victory over Bullitt East on Friday in first-round playoff action.

The Chargers were limited to two Jalen Troutman field goals.

After the teams traded punts to open the game, they then traded turnovers. Bullitt East fumbled deep in its own territory after an interception of their own. Five plays after the fumble, Shorter galloped in from 16 yards out for a 7-0 lead.

Another fumble on the ensuing drive led to seven more Bulldogs points when a 7-yard run by Shay Stone made it a 14-0 game with one minute left in the first quarter.

The teams exchanged field goals in the second period, with Devonta Guillory connecting from 30 yards out for the Bulldogs and Jalen Troutman answering from 27 for the Chargers.

After Troutman’s kick, Bullitt East coach Darrell Vincent rolled the dice with an onside kick attempt. The Chargers were unable to recover, and John Hardin was able to take advantage of the short field. Shorter scored his second touchdown of the game, this one from 3 yards out, with 46 seconds left in the first half.

Bullitt East was able to register its first two first downs in the half and that set up a second field goal by Troutman to cut it to 24-6 at the half.

The Chargers showed life at the start of the second half, but a sack proved costly as Troutman’s 43-yard field goal attempt fell short. The teams both struggled offensively from that point on as a slew of penalties kept both offenses off the scoreboard.

John Hardin was flagged nine times for 75 yards in victory, while Bullitt East committed eight penalties for 68 yards.

The biggest trouble for Bullitt East proved to be turnovers. The Chargers fumbled four times, losing three of them.

From the beginning, the Bulldogs controlled the game at the line of scrimmage, rushing 39 times for 237 yards. The Chargers, meanwhile, could only muster 86 yards on 28 attempts. Bullitt East was more successful throwing the ball, but not successful enough to overcome John Hardin’s huge advantage on the ground.
