#20 Chauncey Gardner, with the ball. Cocoa High School football practice on Friday morning, August 8th.
Teams have been practicing for more than two weeks and Wednesday brought another sign that high school football games are coming soon.
The Associated Press released its preseason football poll of Florida sportswriters and six of Brevard County’s 17 teams were mentioned.
Cocoa, which has advanced to six state semifinals in a row and won three championships in that stretch, got the highest recognition, just behind preseason No. 1 Miami Washington in Class 4A. Though Washington got all 16 first-place votes, the overall point total was 160-141.
Asked on the first day of practice how often the Tornadoes had crossed his mind since last year’s finale, Tigers coach John Wilkinson answered thusly: “They’ve been crossing my mind for three years.”
Melbourne Central Catholic, Merritt Island, Heritage and Palm Bay also made top 10s, and Melbourne was among teams receiving votes in Class 7A. Local teams will play preseason games Friday, including six in the county.
MCC, one of three unbeaten regular season teams from Brevard last year, was fifth in the Class 3A preseason rankings. In 5A, Merritt Island, another of those three, was seventh, while Palm Bay was 10th. Heritage, the third regular season unbeaten of 2013, was ninth in 6A.
Cocoa Beach will play Class 1A No. 4 Lafayette in a Friday preseason game, and Cocoa will welcome 2A’s top-ranked Champagnat in its regular season opener on Aug. 29.
