Snow storm wipes out Tuesday's high school schedule

The snow storm that engulfed New Jersey has already caused major changes to the Shore Conference wrestling schedule for the next couple of days.

Among the changes is a new date for the big Southern at Brick Memorial match. That match, which was originally scheduled for tonight, will now be Thursday night at 7 at Brick Memorial.

If Brick Memorial (10-0, 6-0) wins the match, it will clinch the outright Shore Conference Class A South championship. It would be the Mustangs’ first outright divisional title since 2001. They shared the Class A South title in 2008 with Jackson Memorial and last year with Toms River South.

If Southern (10-0, 3-0) wins the match, it will have the inside track for its first divisional championship since 2005.

Brick Memorial is ranked No. 1 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10 and No. 7 in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association Top 20. Southern is ranked No. 2 in the APP Top 10 and No. 10 in the NJWWA Top 20.

The Ocean at Wall match, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday night, was postponed until Thursday night at 6:30 at Wall. The Ocean at Long Branch match, which was originally scheduled for tonight, was postponed until Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Long Branch because both schools are closed today, Long Branch coach Dan George said late Tuesday afternoon.

With the Shore Conference Tournament seeding meeting scheduled for Sunday at 10 a.m. at Red Bank Regional and the Ocean-Long Branch not being wrestled until Tuesday, it could cause an interesting seeding dilemma for the SCT seeding committee, especially if Ocean defeats Wall on Thursday night.

Among the other wrestling postponements from Tuesday was the Middletown South at Howell Shore Conference Class A South match. That match will now be Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Howell and will precede the Point Boro at Howell match, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

All Shore Conference regular season boys and girls basketball games scheduled for Tuesday were either canceled or postponed. The Class B Central first-place showdown between visiting Point Beach (9-0, 5-0), which is ranked No. 1 in the Asbury Park Press top 10, and host Keyport (6-2, 5-1) was one of Tuesday’s marquee boys basketball games that were postponed. A makeup date for this game hasn’t been announced yet. The No. 3 Matawan (10-1, 4-0) boys basketball team’s Class B North game at Neptune (5-4, 3-2) was also postponed with an undetermined makeup date. The No. 6 Manchester (7-4, 2-3) boys basketball game at Central (3-5, 2-3) was also postponed to undetermined date. The No. 4 Long Branch (7-2, 4-1) boys basketball team’s Class B North game at Wall (5-5, 1-3) was postponed to Jan. 27. The No. 9 Southern (5-3, 3-1) boys basketball gate versus Brick (0-10, 0-6) was postponed to Feb. 8. The Red Bank Catholic (7-3, 5-1) boys basketball team joined the top 10 last weekend at No. 7 and Tuesday’s game versus St. John Vianney was postponed to an undetermined date.

On the girls basketball side, the game between host No. 1 St. John Vianney and No. 6 Red Bank Catholic was postponed to an undetermined date. No. 2 Neptune had its road game at Matawan postponed to an undetermined date as well. No. 9 Holmdel has its home game against Shore moved to Feb. 1.
