With the Northern California title, Pleasant Grove will now face the Southern California champion Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley, who defeated Alemany 66-51 in the Regional title game.
The CIF Girls Division I State Championship between Pleasant Grove and Canyon Springs will be held Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Sleep Train Arena.
The Eagles victory over Berkeley was considered by many as improbable, and that was a word their head coach even agreed with.
“Obviously we go in looking for a win,” said Eagles’ head coach James McKeever. “But I knew with a storied program like Berkeley we’d have our work cut out (for us), and sure enough, we took care of business.”
Pleasant Grove was led by Brittany NGuyen with a team-high 14 points, while Aaliyah Pena finished with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to prevent Berkeley from winning its fourth consecutive NorCal championship.
The girls NorCal title was the first for Pleasant Grove, who was appearing in the regional tournament for the first time in school history.
“It was another game we weren’t supposed to win,” said Pena. “So, it took the pressure off, it took the nerves out and we just played our game.”
