There’s a new attitude at New Rochelle under first-year coach Jarohan Garcia, and the Huguenots are dressing the part.
Coming off of a season marred by controversy after a New Rochelle player broke the jaw of a White Plains player during a game on Oct. 10, Garcia is requiring all of his players to wear a shirt and tie to school on game day. So far, the players are buying in, and on Friday, they picked up the biggest victory of Garcia’s brief tenure with a 2-1 league win over visiting Scarsdale.
“If students take ownership and are proud of what it is that they’re doing, then it creates a sense of accountability,” Garcia said. “I felt that if we (dressed up), it would send us in the right direction of building that team unity. It’s important to me that they take pride in what they’re doing and that they project that image.”
Beni La Rosa netted the first goal for the Huguenots (3-0) on an assist from Misael Jimenez, and then Alejandro Oliveros banged home a rebound off of Brian Barrenechea’s free kick early in the second half to make it 2-0.
“I try to preach to them, ‘Let’s get garbage goals,’ ” Garcia said. “We’ll pick up anyone’s garage. All that matters is that it hits the back of the net.”
Jonny Dorf scored on an assist from Gabe Harousseau in the 61st minute for the Raiders (3-1).
It will be a quick turnaround for New Rochelle, which will travel to defending league champ Mamaroneck at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
“It’s a completely different challenge,” Garcia said. “They play much differently than Scarsdale does.”
