Winners of two of its final three regular season games — with just a close loss to one of Region 9’s best teams to end the regular season — was enough to give Pine View a chance at making the 3A state playoff bracket.

The Panthers had to travel to Richfield to take on Carbon from Region 12 Monday, and Pine View dominated from start to finish to record a 5-0 victory and earn the right to travel to Tremonton and face Bear River Wednesday.

“It feels good, we did what we wanted to do,” PV coach Sam Johnston said. “The play-in game was kind of a unique situation for us. Not knowing anything about Carbon and playing on a neutral field, there were some unknowns, but we felt pretty good once we got into it.

“It was one of those games where it was more about what we could do, and less about them. We had them under pressure quite a bit. It was a fairly one-sided affair.”

Just five minutes in, Shaneice Lourenco redirected a corner kick from Aubrey Day into the net to get the Panthers on the board. In the 22nd minute, Liza Sterling added to the lead when she scored off a free kick.

In the second half, Pine View scored quickly again with a goal from Day off a penalty kick in the 50th minute. Five minutes later, Day worked a little give-and-go with McKenna Plumb, who knocked it into the corner of the net from about 10 yards out.

The Panthers now hope to generate that kind of offense Wednesday against a Bears team from Region 11 that is winners of six straight and hasn’t lost a match since Sept. 6.

“I think it’s going to be a tough game. It will be similar to playing games against the top two or three teams in our region,” Johnston said. “We’ve been able to hang in there, we just haven’t been able to get that final goal or that final thing to push us over the top.

“I have confidence that we can be in it. Hopefully we can just capitalize on the chances we get. I don’t think we’ll be totally outmatched, and we can create some problems for Bear River.”

Wednesday’s game against the Bears will take place at 4 p.m.
