There is a lot going on this week in our local soccer world, and the biggest event is the Fond du Lac Soccer recreation tournament this weekend at the complex.
When the city decided to eliminate soccer fields at the park, the annual Walleye Weekend soccer tournament became a thing of the past. Your youth association thought it was important to continue to offer a second tournament experience for our players, so our new recreational tournament was born and will debut this weekend.
One of your new board of directors, Joelene Yeskie, decided to take on this project, and with the help of many others, made this opportunity a reality. This Saturday and Sunday will have almost every one of our teams kickin’ and screamin’ at the complex. Each player will get a unique 40th anniversary medal and there are trophies for the winning teams at the U12 and U14 age groups. Stop out at the complex this weekend and soak up some sun and soccer.
On Friday there will be a meeting for anyone interested in playing adult recreation coed soccer. This newly-formed league will be about fun and staying active with the game you know and love. Even if you have never played, it is a great opportunity to learn the game and be a positive example to your children, your younger brothers and sisters, or the kids in the neighborhood. There will be an organizational meeting tomorrow 6 p.m. at the complex concession stand. Players can still register and form teams, and games will begin next week.
The Fondy girls will end up playing 20 games out of a possible 24 due to our fabulous Spring. With four of those games coming in the last week, it has made for a pretty compact season.
Thursday will be their senior night at 7 p.m. at the complex. Fond du Lac will say goodbye to seven outstanding young women this year. Three of the seniors have been varsity players for four years. All seven will be missed and honored Thursday. The Cardinals will square off against Winnebago Lutheran for an in-town match that will showcase our local talents. We would love a great crowd, but if you cannot attend, tune into KFIZ for live coverage.
During the recreation league tournament on Saturday the Cardinal girls will play Bay Port at 11 a.m. on field 1. Bring the kids into the stadium and watch some high school action. Immediately following the girls game our boys select team will play at 1 p.m. to highlight our select program. There will be no charge for the games. You not only get great entertainment, but a bargain as well.
Do not forget to sign up your young player for soccer camp. Check out Greg Winkler Camps on the fondysoccer.com page. If you mention “Soccer Shorts” you can still get the early bird price. If you have a young goalkeeper, check out the goalkeeper camp — a great way to get exposure to that unique position.
Keep on Kick’in.
