South Meck will host Olympic on Friday night.

With just three weeks left in the season, the South Meck 8 is still wide open at the top. There are four teams within 1 game of each other at the top, starting with Charlotte Catholic and Providence leading the way at 4-0. Behind them are Ardrey Kell and South Mecklenburg, both 3-1 in conference following tough road losses last week. With a strong possibility of having four playoff teams, the South Meck remains one of the premier conferences in the entire state.

Charlotte Catholic (7-1, 4-0) at West Mecklenburg (1-7, 0-4)

Charlotte Catholic had to earn it last week, topping Park Road rival South Meck 23-20 in a thrilling battle at the top of the So. Meck. The Cougars will most likely be without Jaret Anderson as Catholic preps for a battle with Ardrey Kell next week. Catholic’s offensive line should have no problems moving the chains in this one, and missing Anderson shouldn’t make a huge difference. West Meck has struggled defensively this year, allowing 34 points per game this year. The Hawks will need a lot of help if they want to keep it close with the Cougars. West Meck’s schedule will allow them to battle for two wins late in the year, but the talent gap with Catholic is just too much to overcome.

Providence (7-1, 4-0) at Harding University (1-6, 0-4)

In perhaps the biggest mismatch in the conference, Providence will visit Harding on Friday night. The Panthers put a huge feather in the cap last week, defeating Ardrey Kell 38-27. Providence’s offense has been outstanding after a 30-9 loss in week one. The Panthers are averaging 34 points per game during a seven-game win streak. Caleb York and Brian Mattar have led a potent Providence offense this year. Harding comes into this game on the heels of two 60 point losses at the hands of Berry Academy and Ardrey Kell. The Rams have been shutout three weeks in a row, and have not led a game since opening night against Garinger. Harding just doesn’t have the players to keep up in this conference, and Friday night will be extremely difficult for the Rams.

USA TODAY High School Sports Predictor: Providence 40, Harding 0

Olympic (3-5, 1-3) at South Mecklenburg (6-2, 3-1)

Olympic snapped a three-game losing skid last week, topping West Meck 32-26. The Trojans have a real opportunity to win five games this season with a favorable schedule down the stretch. If they can pull off an upset against South Meck, the Trojans will be in prime position to slip into the playoffs. South Meck comes into this contest following a heartbreaking loss against rival Charlotte Catholic. The Sabres have been strong this season, but have a brutal stretch to close the season. South Meck should win this game, but if they’re unable to focus on the task at hand and let their mind wander to Providence next week, the Sabres could be in trouble.

USA TODAY High School Sports Predictor: South Meck 35, Olympic 15

Berry Academy (3-5, 1-3) at Ardrey Kell (6-2, 3-1)

Berry Academy lit up the scoreboard last week, dominating rival Harding in the Battle of Alleghany. It was a much-needed victory, snapping a three-game losing streak for Berry. Following this week, the Cardinals will have two winnable games against West Meck and Olympic. Ardrey Kell suffered a tough loss last week at Providence, and the Knights will look to get back on track at home. The Knights will need to take advantage of this game to get healthy and work out the kinks on defense before a huge battle at Charlotte Catholic next week. Berry has the ability to score some points, but Ardrey Kell’s talent will make the difference at the end of the game.

USA TODAY High School Sports Predictor: Ardrey Kell 38, Berry 21
