CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Myers Park men’s team was looking for a clean sweep against South Meck on Monday night as they took on the Sabers. The women’s basketball team had just dismantled the Lady Sabers and the boy’s team was looking to follow in their footsteps.

It wasn’t looking good early for the Mustangs as the Sabers jumped out to an 8-0 run before Lee Houck drained a deep range three to finally get the Mustangs on the board.

After a pair of free throws by Myers Park, South Meck led 16-0 when Duncan Richey stole the ball and got sent to the charity stripe where he would go 1-2 and bring the South Meck lead to 16-11 with two minutes left in the first.

Zaqwuan Matthews,who has committed to play for Will Wade and the UTC Mocs, drained a thee and drove through the lane for a tough score to bring the Mustangs withing three before the end of the first quarter.

After sloppy play by both teams that saw turnover after turnover, Jalen Blakeney hit a deep three over Matthews that gave the Sabers a five point lead with just over five minutes in the second quarter.

Zaqwuan Matthews gave the Mustangs their first lead of the game at 23-22 with just over three minutes left in the second. Myers Park would take a 30-29 lead into the half.

After exchanging back-to-back buckets to open the second half, South Meck would go on a 18-8 run to end the third quarter with the lead 47-38.

Zaqwuan Matthews would get the Mustangs to within four when Jalen Blakeney hit a three to put the Sabers back up seven with just over five minutes left in the game.

The Sabers would crash the glass and hit their free throws to walk away with a 71-55 victory over the Mustangs.

South Meck will travel to Porter Ridge on December, 6 to take on the Pirates.
