Sprague’s Teagan Quitoriano (11) pushes past teammate Cole Freeburg (23) and South Salem’s Gabe Matthews (3) in the first half of the South Salem vs. Sprague boy’s basketball game at Sprague High School in Salem on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014. South Salem leads 42-21 at the half.

The South Salem High School boys basketball team is picking up right where it left off.

Coming off an undefeated season of league play a year ago, the Saxons opened competition in the new Greater Valley Conference Friday with a dominating 82-52 victory at Sprague.

Senior Seth Erickson was on of four Saxons to tally double-figures in scoring and led the way with 16 points.

Rey Ruiz added 12, Jack Frazier had 11 and Connor Fohn chipped in with 10 to keep South Salem undefeated at 4-0.

The Olympians (0-4) got a game-high 18 points from sophomore point guard Kaiden Flanigan with Perry VanHouten adding nine.

This is deeply experienced South Salem team, and with several returning players who contributed to last year’s state semifinals run, the Saxons proved too talented for the youthful Olympians, who started four underclassmen.

South Salem led from start to finish as Erickson scored the first points of the game with a three-pointer, one of two that he made in the opening period.

He also had a breakaway dunk and driving layup to beat the buzzer to give the Saxons an 18-9 advantage at the first quarter’s end.

That lead grew to 21 at halftime as Ruiz buried a pair of treys after Brent Kemp began the quarter with four straight points for the visitors.

Sprague managed only three made field goals in the second quarter with Austin Kleinman making a conventional three-point play and Flanigan draining a deep three, the first of nine points in the period for the sophomore.

Any hopes the Olys had of making a comeback however quickly vanished to start the third quarter.

Fohn connected on two straight three-pointers sandwiching a breakaway layup by Ruiz to give the Saxons and 8-2 run in the first 90 seconds of the quarter.

Flanigan’s second trey of the game stopped South Salem’s run but Erickson showed off his passing skills late in the quarter with a pair of assists on baskets by Jack Frazier and Jacob Ramos while also adding another bucket of his own on a spinning shot inside the key.

The Saxons led 62-36 at the end of the third and the final period was contested mostly by the two teams’ reserves.

Erickson started the quarter but left shortly after a rim-shaking dunk with 4:20 remaining that gave South Salem its biggest lead of the night, 74-41.

VanHouten got hot late, scoring eight of his nine points in the dying minutes as the freshman draining two three-pointers and a pair of free throws.
