What’s the story?: Spackenkill, coached by Mike Corbett, has established a local dynasty over the last half decade, winning five straight Section 9 Class B titles, as well as three Mid-Hudson Athletic League titles in the last five years with a record of 79-14-3 over the last five seasons. The Spartans defeated Marlboro 2-0 in Saturday’s Section 9 final in Hyde Park behind goals from Katie Lillis and Julia Kollesar. In the current run though, Spackenkill has not broken through to make the state final four in four trips to the state tournament, going 0-3 (Spackenkill shared the 2010 Section 9 title with Highland, but was denied advancement to the state tournament on penalty kicks).
Seton Catholic Central ended Oneonta’s three-year title reign as Section 4 Class B champions with a 3-1 overtime win over the Yellowjackets at Norwich High School on Saturday. Michaela Farrell and Emily Purtell scored in overtime, and Genna Michitti scored in the second half for Seton Catholic Central, which is coached by Kelly Vavalle.
