Spartans wreck Beckman in triple dual

A Saturday tournament, a Sunday practice, a Monday triple dual or a Wednesday workout.

Solon junior Louis Gnida doesn’t care, he just wants to wrestle.

Gnida put that attitude on display Monday, winning three matches in dominating fashion as Solon finished 1-2 in a WaMaC double dual.

Solon defeated Dyersville Beckman 57-16 before falling to Williamsburg 45-26 and Mount Vernon 37-22 in a rare Monday competition.

“Louis loves wrestling,” Solon coach Brooks McLaren said. “He’s a competitor. That’s what Louis does.”

Gnida was coming off a third-place finish at the Gary Curtis Invitational on Saturday in Riverside, where he dropped just his second match of the season to fourth-ranked Elliot Henderson of West Liberty 3-0 in the semifinals.

It didn’t take Gnida long to put that loss behind him.

He won back-to-back matches by first-period pins Saturday to place third and didn’t skip a beat Monday.

The junior 120-pounder needed just 1 minute, 33 seconds to pin Brad Ertl of Beckman, and notched a 15-0 tech fall win over Garrett Knepper of Williamsburg.

He capped his perfect 3-0 evening with a 6-0 decision over Tony Garcia of Mount Vernon.

“He was happy to come in yesterday and work out, and today he had a smile on his face,” McLaren said. “He just loves wrestling. If we had to compete again tomorrow, he’d be ready to go.”

Gnida, who is ranked eighth at 120 pounds in Class 2A, improved to 19-2 with his three wins Monday.

“He’s very good when he is riding on top, and he is getting much better on his feet,” McLaren said. “Overall, he is just a wrestler. He eats and breathes wrestling. That’s what he is about.”

Senior 113-pounder Bailey Redlinger and junior 132-pounder Kade Steuhm joined Gnida at 3-0 Monday.

Redlinger won a match by forfeit and notched a pair of decisions. He defeated Willamsburg’s Gavin Ritchie 4-0 and downed Josh Hanson of Mount Vernon 9-5.

“Bailey had a good weekend this weekend. He won a few matches, and once you kind of taste that winning and you get used to your hand being raised, you get hungry,” McLaren said. “I’m proud of the way he battled back today.”

Steuhm won a 9-2 decision over Cody Feldman of Beckman before picking up a pair of pins.

It took Steuhm just 28 seconds to pin Charlie Engelbrecht of Mount Vernon, and he pinned Jose Maldonado of Williamsburg in 1:24.

Trevor Yahr (126), Trevor Nelson (152) and Danny Whitmore (195) all went 2-1 for Solon on Monday.

In the win over Beckman, the Spartans won 11 of 14 matches, accumulating bonus points in eight of those wins.

Solon won four matches by forfeit and got pins from Gnida at 120 pounds, Yahr at 126, Trevor Nelson at 152 and Danny Whitmore at 182.

Solon won six matches in the dual against Williamsburg, but the Raiders earned six pins and won a match by forfeit on their way to a 45-26 win.

Mount Vernon won eight matches in the final dual of the night, with Solon’s wins coming from Gnida at 120, Redlinger at 113, Steuhm at 132, Cole Fritz at 138, Max Turkal at 195 and Justin Gibbs at 285.

Solon was without top-ranked 220-pounder Lance Evans on Monday, and eighth-ranked 285-pounder Logan Linderbaum won his only match before leaving with an illness.

“I thought we competed well, and overall, we battled very, very hard,” McLaren said. “For a Monday, we did a good job.”
