Ben Harris missed a spot on the podium by the narrowest of margins during the WIAA state boys swim meet Saturday.
The Stevens Point Area Senior High sophomore finished seventh in the Division 1 100-yard butterfly, coming in just .03 seconds behind Garner Kohrell of Appleton North/East.
His time of 52.41 at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium was .20 faster than his performance during in a sectional meet last week in Hudson.
Madison Memorial sophomore Ben Gebhart won the event with a time of 50.03.
Harris also placed 16th in the 50 free (22.39), and was part of a pair of Panthers relays — the 200 medley that finished 12th and the 400 free that was 13th.
SPASH senior Ryan Neigbauer, who was the swimmer of the year in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, also was part of both relay teams. He finished 13th in the 100 backstroke (54.75) and 19th in the 200 IM (2:02.43).
The Panthers, the WVC champions, finished 19th overall in the team competition. Madison Memorial won the state championship by 112.5 points over Madison West.
Memorial won the 200 medley relay in 1:33.92, just .31 seconds off the state record.
The Panthers team of Harris, Neigbauer, Tyler Tanko and Willey Rosenthal finished in 1:40.61.
The 400 free team of Neigbauer, Harris, Rosenthal and Tom Negaard posted a time of 3:18.07, which was .59 faster than the sectional time.
Arrowhead won the relay in 3:09.04.
