Brooke Kettleborough handed out 66 assists and the Spencer volleyball team couldn’t have opened its season in better fashion, sweeping all four of their matches at the Spencer Invitational on Tuesday night.

Macie Weber and Marisa Johnson paced the Rockets’ hitting attack with 23 and 22 kills, respectively, in wins over McDonell Central (25-16, 25-10), Stanley-Boyd (25-23, 25-22), Pittsville (25-10, 25-14) and Prentice (25-19, 25-19).

“It was a good start to the season,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “We now have lots of things to work on as a team.”

Julie Berres and Jenna Schober served up nine aces apiece, while Johnson and Courtney Buss keyed the defense with 30 and 29 digs, respectively.

Team standings: 1. Spencer 4-0; 2. Stanley-Boyd 3-1; 3. McDonell Central 2-2; 4. Prentice 1-3; 5. Pittsville 0-4.

Marshfield Invitational

Stephanie Rhodes had 31 kills, while Natalie Zuekle had 37 digs and 19 kills to lead the Tigers to a second-place finish in their own invitational with a 4-1 record.

Marshfield beat Hudson 15-25, 25-20, 15-5, Merrill 25-13, 21-25, 15-12, Ashland 25-17, 25-14 and Antigo 25-17, 27-25, and suffered its only loss to tourney champion Newman Catholic 25-20, 25-19.

“I’m really pleased with how we performed in this first tournament,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “This team is just going to continue to get better and better the more they play together.”

Ellie Fehrenbach had 17 kills and Jenny Sceppler 31 digs, while Sara Dasler had 52 assists and nine aces and Anna Ripp had 48 assists.

Wausau West 2, Marshfield 1

Charlie Hessil and Jared Kumbera scored first-half goals for the Warriors and West held on to defeat the Tigers in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game.

“I think to start our conference season with a good win against a good Marshfield team is a huge confidence builder,” West coach Brady Mesenberg said. “They out-possessed us, but we were very efficient in our scoring opportunities. To beat a good team like Marshfield you have to hit your shots, and we did that tonight.”

Alex Sainterme scored the Tigers’ lone goal.

Wausau West Quad

Marathon swept its three matches at the Wausau West Quad, defeating Auburndale, Lakeland and the host Warriors.

The Raiders dropped the first set in two of the three matches, but rallied to take the final two against Aubundale and West. Auburndale finished the day 2-1, West was 1-2 and Lakeland went 0-3.
