Former St. Joseph Central Catholic football coach Scott Knisely was named coach at Toledo St. Francis de Sales.

A familiar Fremont face will become a foe of Fremont Ross High School in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference.

Tuesday afternoon Toledo St. Francis de Sales High School announced the hiring of former St. Joseph Central Catholic head football coach Scott Knisely to take over the Knights’ program.

“The strong tradition of this football program and the people involved with this school made my family’s decision very easy when this job was offered to me,” Knisely said in a statement released by the school Tuesday afternoon. “I’m a big believer in tradition, and want to continue to build on the strong tradition of St. Francis de Sales.”

Knisely, an SJCC alum, was an assistant coach for the Crimson Streaks from 2007-2009 before taking over the program in 2010. In his three seasons as head coach, he led SJCC to a 23-10 record, including postseason appearances in 2010 and 2012, with a 1-2 record in the playoffs. He was named the Midland Athletic League’s Football Coach of the Year in 2012.

Knisely resigned from SJCC in November 2012 citing family obligations preceding the birth of his first child with his wife, Melissa. Since leaving SJCC, Knisely has been an assistant coach with Hiram and Lake Erie colleges.

“It’s a great honor to be selected as the next head football coach here at St. Francis de Sales,” Knisely said in a statement. “When I left high school football for a family commitment, I hoped that I would be able to return someday. I am excited to return to a school committed to success both on and off the field.”

The Knights’ football program has struggled in recent years. Since posting an 11-2 record in 2009, St. Francis has gone just 19-32 over the last five seasons, which includes an 8-3 record in 2013. St. Francis went just 1-9 in 2014 and finished last out of 27 teams in Division II, Region 4.

“When we began our search, we felt that prior head coaching experience and success were critical,” St Francis athletic director Carl Janke said. “Scott has achieved that in our area and in a Catholic school. We’re happy that he was looking to return to high school football at the same time we were looking for our next coach.”
