St. Mary Central Zephyrs hold off Shiocton

Jenna Thelen scored 17 points and the Zephrys held off a fourth-quarter rally to beat Shiocton 43-37 in a WIAA Division 4 regional girls’ basketball semifinal game Friday in Shiocton.

St. Mary Central jumped out to a 13-7 lead after one and led for much of the game, including a 10-point bulge with three minutes to go.

Madi Morack, who led Shiocton with 15 points, hit a couple of three-pointers as the Chiefs cut their deficit to three points with 40 seconds to go.

From there, the Zephyrs held on to advance to tonight’s regional final at Amherst.

St. Mary Central hit seven of 15 fourth-quarter free throws, just enough to hold off the Chiefs.

“It was a good win,” Zephyrs coach Robert Townsend said. “It was a battle. It was a pretty tight game all the way through.”

Brillion 49, Reedsville 40

At Reedsville, Tori Lemke scored 16 points as Brillion rallied for the upset win over the Panthers.

Trailing 32-28 after three quarters, the Lions finished on a 21-8 run. Brillion (17-7) travels to Algoma today to face the top-seeded Wolves in a regional final.

“I thought we played with great intensity on defense and rebounded very well tonight,” Brillion coach Jeff Capelle said. “I thought we kept our composure for the entire game and made plays down the stretch. We had a a great team effort tonight.”

Alaina Beimborn and Mckinzie Fischer added nine points each for Brillion.

Hilbert 55, Sheboygan Lutheran 37

At Hilbert, Erica Gehl scored 24 points to lead three Hilbert players in double figures.

The Wolves outscored Sheboygan Lutheran 20-6 in the third quarter to take control. Hailey Hemauer scored eight of her 12 points in the quarter.

Erin Leffler also finished with 12 points for Hilbert.
