Phoenix St. Mary’s senior receiver Lukas Treffers entered the Arizona high school record book after catching 11 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 42-41 loss to Tolleson.
With one game left in his career, Treffers has 87 catches, setting the Division I state record for most in a season. The previous mark was 84, set in 1996 when Travis Brun had 84 catches for Glendale Deer Valley.
Treffers has 1,019 yards and 14 receiving touchdowns in nine games.
St. Mary’s (3-6) finishes the season Friday night at Phoenix Alhambra.
Treffers would need 25 catches to break the overall state record for catches in a season. John Leonard caught 112 passes for Cave Creek Cactus Shadows two years ago.
Another state record should fall Friday when Cactus Shadows quarterback Bryce Kinsler closes out his career against Phoenix Shadows Mountain. Kinsler is 22 yards away from breaking the all-time career passing yardage record of 8,517, set two years ago by Show Low’s Rathen Ricedorff. Remarkably, Cactus Shadows has won only five games since his break-out sophomore season when he threw for more than 3,200 yards.
