St. Mary’s cross country had a strong performance as Blues runners finished second, third and fourth in a meet against Tigard and West Linn Wednesday night. KGW chatted with head coach Mike Bojorquez to get his thoughts on this race and what he expects from the girls the rest of the season.
Going into the meet, what were you looking for?
“We were trying to pack it up and run together. We have a big meet in Couer d’Alene this weekend. Not to look past our league competition, but our focus was to run together as a pack at good tempo paces.”
How do you think they did?
“They did great! One through five right together. And our sixth and seventh runner were not too far behind, so good results for our first 5K of the year.”
Looking ahead to Couer d’Alene, what are you expecting from your team?
“We’re going to let them go. We’re going up against the number one team in the region which is Couer d’Alene, Idaho. We’re just going to compete and run as fast as we can.”
Your program has had a lot of success in the past. What are your expectations for this year?
“Our number one goal is to qualify for state. If that means we win league, that’s what we want. Get to state and be on the awards stand again, but we would love to finally win it after two years of being second. That’s our goal. To win state, have our kids run as well as they can and be successful.”
