Congratulations to the St. Michael Catholic Academy women’s basketball team for their dominating performance in the Nov. 20-22, 2014 Best Pack Invitational Tournament hosted by Brentwood Christian School. The Lady Crusaders took home the first place trophy, senior captain Shelby Espinosa was awarded the tournament MVP, and senior captain Rebecca Wells and junior Mary Grace Copa were named to the All-Tournament Team.
St. Michael’s started their run for the Championship by soundly defeating Boerne Geneva 65-27. They returned the next day to post a 51-33 win over Cypress Christian. Those two wins earned the Crusaders a place in the Championship game against the host BCS Bears. This was not the first time these two teams had faced off. The Bears entered the game with a three-year winning streak over the Crusaders, including a close 54-51 victory just four days earlier. Both squads featured talented veterans of the game and both had something to prove in the Championship game. The gym full of excited fans witnessed 32 minutes of intense, fast-paced basketball that ended with the Crusaders on top 54-44.
St. Michael’s head coach Darrel Smith was thrilled for the team and grateful to Crusader fans. “I want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting our team,” said Coach Smith. “Congratulations to Rebecca, Mary Grace, and Shelby. I also want to congratulate junior Ally Weichert, who was by far the best defensive player in the whole tournament.” Other members of the Crusader’s Champion team include senior captain Olivia Bregger, junior Sofia Cornide, sophomores Caitlin Rodgers and Jeena Turner, freshmen Anna Batchik and Gabi Pulsifer, and assistant coach Alvis Dunlap
