CLASS 5-A

Southeast Polk won last year’s state championship. Annie Penquite and Jessica Cole were starters on that team… Iowa City High is ranked No. 1 and has three players scoring in double figures… Second-ranked West Des Moines Valley has a potent offense averaging 68.4 points a game. The Tigers lost once, to fellow qualifier West Des Moines Dowling Catholic… Des Moines East won a state title three years ago. Shareece Burrell is a Bradley recruit, Roichelle Marble plans to play at Wisconsin… Waterloo West has three seniors headed to Division I programs.

CLASS 4-A

Davenport Assumption moved up to 4-A after winning three consecutive state titles in 3-A. Guard Maddie Irmen is the team’s only returning starter… Carlisle won one game last season but is 19-6 this year. Payton Keeney has averaged a team-best 12.3 points… Dallas Center-Grimes won the Little Hawkeye Conference championship in its first season in the league. The team moved from the Raccoon River Conference. Forward Paige Lowary is the star pitcher for the school’s state champion softball team… No. 1-ranked Harlan was the state runner-up last year.

CLASS 3-A

MOC-FV of Orange City was ranked No. 1 all season. The team took second in 2012 and was a semifinalist last year… Bondurant-Farrar is making its third straight trip to state. All five starters return from last season, including Ashley Burrows, who led her team with a 14.3-point average… Mediapolis was a 21-time state qualifier in six-player basketball, is making its first trip to state since 1987 and its first-ever five-player appearance. Andrea Larson is scoring nearly 20 points a game. Williamsburg guard Paige Greiner is a Drake recruit. She averages nearly 16 points a game.

CLASS 2-A

Top-ranked Western Christian of Hull will be seeking its third consecutive state crown. Alissa Pollema, the team’s only returning starter from last year, is scoring at an 8.6-point clip… Des Moines Christian used buzzer beating 3-pointers by Beth Zimmer in back-to-back games to lead her team to state. Teammate Elsa Anderson leads the team with a 15.3-point average… Undefeated Cascade (25-0) was a 3-A qualifier last season. The team is holding opponents to 31.2 points a game… Hudson enters with a 16-game winning streak. The Pirates have a team 3.77 grade-point average.

CLASS 1-A

No. 1-ranked Newell-Fonda was the state runner-up a year ago. Four starters are back… Rockford is making its first appearance since 1973… Colo-Nesco is in the field for the second straight season. Center Caitlyn Riese, who is 6-1, leads the team in scoring (15.3)… Burlington Notre Dame returns, led by Taylor Hickey, who averages 19.1 points… Janesville won a state volleyball title this past fall and will try to add a basketball trophy, too. The school is making its first state basketball appearance… Lynnville-Sully coach Jerry Hulsing won three straight titles at the school from 1997 to 1999.
