CLASS 5-A

Grace Vander Weide
W.D.M. Valley
5-11, Jr., Guard
* First year at state tournament
Vander Weide, one of the state’s top juniors, scored 18.7 points a game to help Valley back to the state tournament for the first time since 2007. She also led the team in rebounding with 6.6 a game. She sank 62 3-pointers, which ranks third-best in Class 5-A. She’s also one of the state’s top free-throw shooters, hitting 91.8 percent of her attempts.

CLASS 4-A

Jess Schaben
Harlan
6-2, Jr., Center
* 2nd year at state tournament
Schaben’s school year so far consists of a 60-4 record in her two sports. The all-state outside hitter led the Harlan volleyball team to a state championship, and her basketball team is undefeated. She’s averaging 12.0 points and 7.9 rebounds a game. Schaben also ranks fourth in the state with 120 blocked shots. She plans to play volleyball at Iowa State.

CLASS 3-A

Alexis Conaway
MOC-FV (Orange City)
6-0, Sr., Guard
* Fourth year at state tournament
A versatile athlete, Conaway has been an all-stater in basketball and volleyball and a state high jump and 4×400-meter relay champion in track. She led her volleyball team to state championships as a junior and senior. The outside hitter has signed to play that sport at Iowa State. Conaway is a two-time Des Moines Sunday Register first-team all-state selection.

CLASS 2-A

Nicole Miller
North Linn
5-9, Jr., Guard
* First year at state tournament
Miller helped lead her team to state for the first time since 1997 and the second time in school history. She averaged 25.6 points a game this season, which ranked fifth in the state among all players. Miller was a Des Moines Sunday Register first-team all-state selection as a sophomore. Although scoring is a big part of her game, she also topped the century mark in steals (101) and assists (115).

CLASS 1-A

London Vais
Adair-Casey
5-10, Sr., Forward
* First year at state tournament
Vais ranks third in the state in scoring at 26.3 points a game. She also is averaging 10 rebounds and is shooting 85 percent from the free-throw line. She’s compiled more than 1,500 points in her career. She led her team to its first state tournament since 1992, during six-player basketball days — a team that featured her mother. She was a third-team all-state selection last year.
