When the Louisiana High School Athletic Association softball state playoff pairings are announced on Thursday, at least five Caddo and Bossier Parish schools are expected to host first-round playoff games.
In Class 5A, Byrd (20-10) and Haughton (17-10) are expected to draw home contests, while Benton (17-10) has earned the same privilege in Class 4A. The Lady Tigers looked especially strong on Tuesday in getting by Calvary 12-10.
“We’re thinking about being state tournament bound,” Benton senior catcher Brittany Craig said. “I’ve never been to the state tournament before.”
The Lady Cavs (25-5) in 2A will be the area’s highest seeded team at either No. 1 or No. 2, despite falling to Benton late in the season.
“That was just the kind of game we needed,” Calvary coach Tiffany Bruton said after Tuesday’s contest. “There is a chance we could fall to No. 2, but we’re still in the playoffs.”
Evangel (20-9), which had been No. 1 in 3A for part of the season, slipped to No. 6 after losing 4-2 to Neville on Tuesday, but will still be at home. The Lady Eagles feature Louisiana Tech-signee Carolina Sanchez on the mound.
First-round games can be played on Friday and Saturday, but with Easter weekend approaching, most teams are expected to wait until Monday. The teams are hoping to advance to Fastpitch 56, the state tournament slated for May 2-3 at Frasch Park in Sulphur.
Among area teams attracting home contests are Natchitoches Central, North Webster, Cedar Creek, St. Mary’s, Many, Florien and Castor.
Local teams expected to make the playoffs but going on the road are Airline, Captain Shreve and Parkway from District 1-5A, along with North DeSoto, Northwood and Loyola from District 1-4A. Lakeview and Lakeside get the same honor in 2A, while Logansport (1A), plus Class B’s Stanley, Doyline and Zwolle hit the road.
