Last week, USA TODAY High School Sports began releasing our preseason Super 25 boys basketball rankings with teams 11-25 and teams 6-10. Today, we’re releasing team No. 5, Plano West of Plano, Texas. The rest of the release schedule:
Nov. 4: Team 4
Nov. 5: Team 3
Nov. 6: Team 2
Nov. 7: Team 1
The Wolves went 23-7 last season and return four starters from a team that lost by two points in the 5A regional quarterfinals. The top returnees include All-State forward D.J. Hogg (20.1 ppg and 7.7 rpg), who has committed to Texas A&M; Mickey Mitchell (13.6 ppg, 7.7 rpg), a 6-8 senior who has committed to Ohio State and can play several positions, including point guard; and senior guard Soso Jamabo (12.5 ppp, 5.4 rpg), one of the top running backs in the country. Another key starter is sophomore guard Chris Giles (5.2 ppg), who already has an offer from Oklahoma. Another key player is A&M commit Tyler Davis, a 6-10, 280-pound senior, who was ineligible last season but is considered the No. 15 player in the 2015 class.
Plano West will play a good early-season schedule that includes the Elite 14 Showcase; a Dec. 8 game with 5A power Lancaster that’s likely to be televised; and the Whataburger Invitational in Fort Worth in late December.
