Swain County assistant football coach Ian Roper was married Friday at midfield after a 56-36 win over Rosman in Bryson City.
The impromptu ceremony was a surprise hatched by his wife, Robin. She arrived in a black limousine that pulled up on the track surrounding Boyce Deitz Field.
Swain County cheerleaders and players (who were still in uniform) were among the witnesses, just moments after the final-regular season home game for the Maroon Devils (8-2, 4-1).
The couple had planned to marry in December, but their wedding venue fell through.
Roper was formerly the athletic director at Cherokee.
