Five victories meant 2-0 for the Red Devils on Thursday.
Richmond swept Hagerstown 5-0 on the Tiernan Center tennis courts to make it back-to-back victories for the Red Devils.
Richmond also won 3-2 on Wednesday over defending sectional, regional and semistate champion Northeastern for an undefeated start to the 2014 RHS boys tennis season.
“I’m pretty pleased with the way we’re playing right now. You never know the first couple of matches what you’re going to get,” said RHS coach Randy Hollingsworth. “Overall I think we’re playing pretty well, and we play some pretty good competition on Saturday with Logansport and Huntington North. We’ll be ready to go.”
Eric Hollingsworth, Jordan Lake and Logan Mayer swept at singles for the Red Devils. Lake and Mayer posted twin 6-0, 6-0 victories, with Hollingsworth winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 over Hagerstown’s Ben Tinkle.
Both of Richmond’s opening opponents are Wayne County foes and possible sectional opponents. Northeastern defeated Richmond in last year’s sectional final.
“Northeastern and us, we both lost some players but we stuck through it,” Eric Hollingsworth said. “This match, we did really well. It’s a really nice start to the season.”
Richmond’s doubles duos completed the 5-0 victory with strong victories. Jacob Weiss and Ross Doughty teamed at No. 1 to win 6-0, 6-0, while Justin Gibbel and Daniel Jones combined for a 6-1, 6-1 win.
“I think we’ve worked pretty hard as far as getting balls into play,” coach Hollingsworth said. “I know I say this a lot, but just not beating ourselves, hitting balls down the middle and just not making a lot of silly mistakes. For the first two matches we’ve done a pretty good job of that.”
Richmond will play two more matches Saturday for four in four days. The Red Devils play host to North Central Conference foes Huntington North and Logansport at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m on the Tiernan courts.
“We brought up a lot of talent. We lost four players last year,” Eric Hollingsworth said. “We’re gradually, slowly improving, and it’s definitely helping us out.”
