Swimming: New Rochelle's David Stewart breaks two marks

New Rochelle junior David Stewart came into Wednesday’s Section 1 Swimming preliminaries with a plan for the 100-yard butterfly.

His plan was to set the meet record in the prelims and then get the Section 1 record in the finals.

Instead, he accomplished both Wednesday when he broke both records with his time of 50.13 seconds at Felix Festa Middle School. His time is in consideration for all-America status.

“This was my best time ever,” Stewart said. “My plan was to get the top seed so I went as fast as I can just in case someone else went faster. I was quite surprised at the time I went.”

The meet record was set Feb. 12, 2007, by Anthony Simco of John Jay. Simco went on to set the Section 1 record later that year at the state meet.

At first, Stewart didn’t realize what he accomplished.

“I heard the crowd reaction and I wondered what happened,” Stewart said. “I turned and saw that I almost broke 50 seconds but I didn’t. It wasn’t that disappointing (not breaking 50 seconds) because I wasn’t expecting to go 50. Now I have a Section 1 record, which is nice, and my plan is to lower it at finals then again at states.”

Stewart will also be the top seed in the 200 freestyle — the only swimmer to be top qualifier in both of his individual events.

Ardsley/Hastings/Edgemont/Dobbs Ferry’s Grant Buckland is the top qualifier in the 50 freestyle.

“I could’ve done better,” Buckland said of the 50. “I went up (in my time) and I plan on going faster. It’s not fast enough for me. I’m happy though to get first.”

North Rockland’s Matthew Zugibe is the top qualifier in the 100 free. He helped the Red Raiders 200 medley relay to the top qualifying time.

“There’s definitely room to improve,” Zugibe said. “My best race by far ws the 100 free. I’m hoping I can hold onto my spot and better my time. I want to break the 48 mark.”

Horace Greeley’s River Elms, Yorktown’s Marcel Legros, and Byram Hills/Briarcliff/Pleasantville/Valhalla/Westlake’s Charles McAuley round out the list of top qualifiers.

The top 16 relay teams and swimmers qualify for the Section 1 finals, which were originally scheduled for Thursday but will now be held Friday at 5 p.m. at Felix Festa Middle School due to snow in the forecast.
