Two-time Section 4 champion Zach Colgan of Johnson City was among ten Section 4 wrestlers to receive at-large berths on Wednesday into next week’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships.
Colgan, who lost to Newark Valley’s Derek Holcomb, 4-0, in the Section 4 Division I 160-pound final on Sunday at Binghamton University’s Events Center, was the lone Section 4 wrestler to receive an at-large berth into the Division I Tournament. The JC senior had won back-to-back Section 4 titles prior to this season, and placed fourth at the state tournament last year at 152.
In Division II, Maine-Endwell’s Kobe Garrehy (126 pounds), Tioga’s Jesse Manuel (132), Candor’s Tyler Hallett (285), Whitney Point’s Jordan Torbitt (160), Sidney’s Kai Sabada (195), Walton’s Logan Robinson (120), Waverly’s Brandon Ellers (170) and Watkins Glen’s Brandon Gould (113) and Ian Chedzoy (182) received at-large berths.
The additions bring to 40 the number of Section 4 wrestlers who will be competing at the state championships, which will be held Feb. 28-March 1 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
