Athletic achievement: He averaged 20.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.0 steals per game this past season, leading the Spartans (30-3) to the Class AAA sectional tournament final. The 2014 Class AAA Mr. Basketball winner, Black is a three-time All-Region 8-AAA First Team selection and a two-time Memphis Commercial Appeal All-Metro First Team honoree. He concluded his prep basketball career with 1,724 points.

Academic excellence: Black has maintained an A-minus average.

Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally with Habitat for Humanity, as a youth basketball coach and has donated his time to multiple community service projects in association with his church youth group.


“Leron is very aggressive on the offensive boards, can shoot it great from mid-range, can handle it well and create his own shot,” said William Buford, head coach of Houston. “He won’t force anything, plus he is very unselfish.”

THE FUTURE: Black has signed with Illinois.
