Three Blue Water Area women took home titles Wednesday at the Golf Association of Michigan Women’s Senior Amateur championships.
Fort Gratiot’s Mary Ann Easton won the B Flight, East China’s Gayle Spinnaze won the C Flight, and Port Huron’s Michele Biernot won the D Flight at St. Clair Golf Club. Maureen Whitehead, of Charlevoix, won the championship flight, taking home the big trophy.
“It’s so fun,” said Easton, the Port Huron Northern girls golf coach, who defeated Insook Jung of Ann Arbor in 19 holes to claim her flight’s championship. “Girls that have lower handicaps, this is fun because they pair you up, and there’s no shots. You just play real golf, and there’s nothing like it, because anything can happen.
“You can play people who are better than you, and in match play, you can beat them if you’re having a good day. If you’re having a bad hole, it’s just one down.”
Easton’s title match was the only one that made it through the 18th hole in the five flights. She was 1-up on Jung heading into the 18th hole, which Jung won, sending it to a 19th, where Easton closed the match out.
Spinazze won 5-and-4 against Deb Horning, of Bloomfield Hills, while Biernot won 4-and-3 against Suzanne Made,j of Detroit.
Chesterfield’s Rebecca Ulman won the E Flight, defeating Jane Schnoor, of Rockford, 2-and-1.
Whitehead, who was the No. 1 seed entering the tournament, won her finals match 3-and-2 against Susan Campbell, of Kalamazoo. It’s her second Senior Amateur title.
“I just wanted to play steady golf and make as many pars as I could,” Whitehead said. “When I made bogeys, a lot of times my opponent was making bogey. I made a couple birdies out there, which always wins holes out there, pretty much.
“I just played steady. Just steady golf down the middle, if I was a little bit off, I got her back in play, and I putted well, which was the key at this course.”
Janina Jacobs, of St. Clair, won the consolation bracket in the Championship Flight. Other consolation-bracket winners were Frances Upton, of Roscommon (B Flight), Lori Rogers, of Washington Township (C Flight), Hilda Livingston, of Fort Gratiot (D Flight), and Karen Strock, of Manchester (E Flight).
