Three locals advance to tennis semis

Caddo Magnet’s Jacy Chan and Byrd’s girls doubles team of Avery Bryan and Abby Inabnet will represent the area in Wednesday’s Division I and Division II state tennis semifinals in Monroe.

Chan and the Byrd pair each won three matches to advance to the semifinals, where they hope to win and advance to the state finals to be played later Wednesday.

Byrd coach Karen Jantz said Bryan advanced to the state finals in 2013 with a different partner, and now she’s using that experience in an attempt to win the Division I doubles title.

“They are like the last man standing because they are the last players left from our region,” Jantz said. “Both of them are seniors so hopefully they will do well (Wednesday).”

Bryan/Inabnet will face the Dominican pair of Artigue/Beck in the Division I semis. The championship was supposed to be decided Tuesday, but a late start Monday because of rain pushed the competition into Wednesday.

Chan is just a freshman, and her closest set was 6-3 in the Division II first round of singles. She rolled 6-1, 6-2 through the second round and quarterfinals.

“She’s an aggressive player, and she plays every point to the max,” said Magnet coach Laura Addington. “She’s mentally focused on what she’s doing, and when she’s ready to go, she gets the job done.”

Division III, Division IV Division V play will begin Wednesday.

In Division I boys singles, Byrd’s Austin Copete advanced to the quarters before losing to Mandeville’s Ben Guilbeau. Copete reached the state championship match in 2013.

Teammate Colin Lucius reached the second round while Captain Shreve’s Stacy Hooper, Airline’s Isaiah Zimmer and Captain Shreve’s Zavier Blackman fell in the opening round.

In Division I boys doubles, Byrd’s Grey Bianca and Pedro Simoncini advanced to the quarters while teammates Colin Day/Andrew Inabnet and Joey Jernigan/Christian Roberts getting to the second round. Airline’s Trenton Lewis and Corland Thibodeaux also advanced to the second round.

In Division I girls singles, Captain Shreve’s Megan Bundrick and Kaylee Hooper each won matches before falling in the second round.

In Division I girls doubles, Byrd’s Madison Atkinson/Amelia Trombetta and Evan Bryan/Tess Layton each got to the second round.

Moving to Division II boys doubles, Benton’s Christopher Bates and Ruston’s Caleb White pushed to the quarterfinals before falling. Other players that won their first-round match before falling include Benton’s Collin Sanford and Fair Park’s Cedric Thomas.

In D-II boys doubles, Ruston’s Matt Oakes/Brandon Drewett is still alive in the semifinals and will face a Vandebilt Catholic pair. Two Caddo Magnet pairs in Spencer Blum/Scott Nguyen and Kenneth Goodwin/Kyle Berney reached the quarters.

In D-II girls singles, Ruston’s Sarah Cowell and Benton’s Megan Freman won their first-round matches before losing in the second round.

In D-II girls doubles, Ruston’s Courtney McKinney and Kellen Skains were the lone pair to win a match.
