The Section 6A boys hockey quarterfinals will feature one of the area’s better rivalries when Sartell plays Sauk Rapids.
The game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sports Arena East. The winner advances to the semifinals at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Municipal Athletic Complex. The final is 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at the MAC.
The teams have played twice in Central Lakes Conference play this season, with Sartell winning 3-2 in overtime Dec. 3 and the Storm capturing the rematch 6-2 Jan. 16.
This one will be the rubber match.
It has been close. Since the 2005-06 season, Sartell leads the series 10-9. The Sabres had a stretch from 2008 to last year when they had won six of eight.
Before that, Sauk Rapids had a streak of five straight wins, including three during the ’05-06
Sauk Rapids has been led this season offensively by Travis Kothenbeutel and Ryan Rutar. Going into the Storm’s game Friday night wth Brainerd, Kothenbeutel had 27 goals and 18 assists.
Rutar had 14 goals and 15 assists.
Six players for the Storm had 20 or more points.
Sartell has three players with 30 or more points, led by Spencer Zwiener (16 goals, 21 assists going into the St. Cloud Apollo game), Aaron Randall (16 goals, 18 assists) and Kyle Erickson (13 goals, 20 assists).
Section 6A should be entertaining throughout. The top half-dozen teams are all equally matched. Sartell and Sauk Rapids are two of them.
Both have the capability of winning the section. One won’t have that chance after Tuesday.
