This year’s Solon High School football team is looking to improve upon the 6-5 overall record the squad posted in 2013 and to qualify for the playoffs for the 14th time in the past 16 seasons.
The Comets return several letterwinners who played important roles on last year’s playoff team, including senior starters Ryan Gallagher, Gage Golic, Tyree Seals and John Sensibaugh.
Gallagher, a 6-foot, 195-pound quarterback, threw for 1,041 yards and eight touchdowns as the team’s field general in 2013.
Golic, a 6-foot-2, 243-pound two-way lineman, has started on the offensive line each of the past two seasons.
Last fall, Seals, a 6-foot-1, 218-pound two-way starter, hauled in six passes and scored a touchdown from his tight end position on offense and recorded 67 tackles as a key cog on the team’s defense from his end position.
Sensibaugh, a 6-foot, 200-pound linebacker, tallied 107 tackles and an interception as a starter last season.
Solon will again employ a Multiple-I formation offense and use a 4-3 defensive scheme under 12th-year head coach Jim McQuaide.
The Comets, who posted a 3-2 mark in Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division play last season, last won a league crown in 2011.
Solon will open the season at home against Kenston on Aug. 29.
