Track and field: Carmel's Benito Muniz shines at Northern Counties Championships

NEW YORK

Benito Muniz’s cross country season started to pick up speed toward the end. The Carmel junior is thinking about a repeat in indoor track.

“That’s kind of the plan,” Muniz said. “Keep it smooth at the beginning and really start pouring it on at the end.”

The plan is in motion. Muniz raced off with the 1,000 meters at the Northern Counties Championships Friday night at The Armory, running a personal-best 2 minutes, 32.61 seconds.

“I need to get in the mindset of champion and I need to get in tune and to get efficient,” Muniz said. “That’s what I was kind of working on today.”

Muniz finished sixth in the Nike Cross Nationals New York Regional and 53rd at nationals in Portland in the fall. Now he would like to run 9:20 in the 2 mile and under 4:20 in the mile. He has an eye on running the 2 mile at indoor nationals.

“The season is a transition season to outdoors,” Muniz said. “And then outdoors we’re really going to start pushing the pace.”

Mahopac’s Kiera Sheridan claimed the girls side of the 1,000 at 3:15.01. Brewster’s Jaynie Criscione won the triple jump at 33 feet, 3 inches. Teammate Caitlin Lander threw 34 feet, ¼inch to take the title in the shot put.

The Arlington boys and girls swept the team titles.
