Mary Cain will not be setting any records in the 800 meters at the NYRR Millrose Games.
The 17-year-old pro from Bronxville has switched events. She will instead be running again in the women’s Wanamaker Mile Feb. 15 at The Armory in northern Manhattan.
“Last year I came in second, and would love to see if I can finish one place higher!” Cain said in a statement on nyrrmillrosegames.org. “I believe this race will better prepare me for the following week’s USA Indoor Championships.”
Cain is the defending national indoor champion in the mile. She finished one-hundredth of a second off the women’s world junior record in the Terrier Invitational last Friday at Boston University, running 4 minutes, 24.11 seconds.
“The Wanamaker Mile will be the preeminent indoor mile race in the world this year,” Cain’s coach, Alberto Salazar, said in his statement, “so it will be great for Mary to continue to experience running in a large field against very good runners.”
