The Seton Catholic Central girls soccer team won’t have much time to savor its Section 4 Class B championship.
The Saints (15-1), who defeated three-time defending champion Oneonta, 3-1, in double overtime on Saturday to win the Section 4 title, will meet Section 9 champion Spackenkill at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a state Class B first-round match at Middletown High School.
The game is part of a tripleheader featuring first-round contests between Section 4 and Section 9 programs. Section 4 Class A champion Vestal meets Goshen at 2. with Section 4 Class AA champion Elmira playing Monroe-Woodbury in the finale at 6. The winners will advance to play the Section 1 champion in a regional final on Sunday in Arlington.
Seton CC had lost to Oneonta the previous three years in the Sectional finals before coming up with the victory Saturday behind overtime goals by Michaela Farrell and Emily Purtell.
“They are still pretty excited about the win, but now it’s time to switch to the next game,” Seton CC coach Kelly Vavalle said. “I’m expecting a good game, (Spackenkill) plays a similar game to a lot of the teams we usually play.”
Spackenkill (18-1) captured its fourth straight Section 9 Class B title with a 2-0 victory over Marlboro. Kate Lillis and Julia Kollesar each scored goals for the Spartans.
Vestal (15-1-1) cruised to its fifth straight Section 4 title with a 6-0 victory over Maine-Endwell on Friday, with Julia Lovaglio scoring three goals in the victory for the Golden Bears. It was the 14th shutout this season for Vestal.
Goshen (17-1) defeated Wallkill, 2-0, on Thursday to win the Section 9 title. Goshen is averaging just under four goals a game and are led by the duo of Braxton Clark (13 goals) and Kacie Borisewich (12 goals).
Elmira (13-2-1) successfully defended its Section 4 title by virtue of its 2-0 victory over Corning on Friday. The Express will meet a Monroe-Woodbury squad led offensively by the high-scoring duo of Caitlin Leen (22 goals) and Samantha Trimblett (17). M-W (16-2) defeated Minisink Valley, 7-1, in the Section 9 final.
