Oakland junior Greg Cantrell became the first from Rutherford County to punch his ticket to next month’s BlueCross Spring Fling by winning the Section 2-AAA decathlon on Tuesday at Riverdale.

Cantrell won the track and field event with 5,454 points — 40 more than Tullahoma’s Kris Potts Howard.

Cantrell won despite doing four of the events — 1,500-meter run, pole vault, shot put and discus — for the first time in a competition. It was just his third time triple jumping in a meet. Cantrell is the second Oakland athlete in as many years to qualify for the state decathlon. Ben Swartz qualified last year.


Blackman 2, Smyrna 0: Marcus Evey pitched a complete-game no-hitter to lead the Blaze to a series sweep of Smyrna. Evey finished with nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched with zero runs and one walk allowed.

Jacob Whitehair finished with two hits.

Huntland 1, MTCS 0: Philip Bonabi (4-4) took the loss, allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Justin Winn, Bonabi, Austin Melton and Griffin Harper finished with one hit each for the Cougars (14-14, 6-6 District 9-A).

MTCS 5, Huntland 4 (Monday): Griffin Harper (1-1) earned the victory for the Cougars. He allowed four hits and zero runs in 423 innings pitched.

Bonabi finished 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI. Winn and Ben Brown added two hits each.


La Vergne 7, Stewarts Creek 6: Crimson Reynolds finished with two hits and Timira Ray, Alison Armstrong, Sierra Oakley and Maddie Powell added one hit each.

Macon County 3, Central Magnet 2: Alyssa Ward took the loss for the Lady Tigers. Whitney Smith, Alyssa Ward, Maddie Moeller and Macy Murphy finished with two hits.


Stewarts Creek 1, Lebanon 0: Dylan Campbell scored a penalty kick to lead the Red Hawks to the win.

Riverdale 3, Smyrna 0: Zach Gravatt, Diego Roderiguez, Cristian Fuentes scored goals for the Warriors and Troy Gravatt also added two assists.

La Vergne 3, Columbia 2: Ivan Ontiveros, Jairo Del Campo and Christian Garcia scored goals for the Wolverines.


District 9-A/AA Individual Tournament: Eight different MTCS tennis players won quarterfinal matches on Tuesday to advance to today’s semifinal matches, which will be be begin at 10 a.m. at Old Fort Park.

Second-seeded Griffin Emrick defeated Sycamore’s Andrew Fortner 6-0, 6-3 in boys singles. Third-seeded Juliann Peters defeated Greenbrier’s Carley DeSpain 7-5, 6-1 to advance in girls singles.

The top-seeded boys doubles team of Thomas Goodwyn and Will Reeves defeated the doubles team of Wheeler and Ziegemeier, of Sycamore, 6-0, 6-0.

The top-seeded doubles team of Sarah Brackin and Chandler Adams defeated the doubles team of Hinkle and Spicer, of Greenbrier, 6-0, 6-0. The doubles team of Jenna Hixson and Cammie Adams defeated the doubles team Hyder and Prince, of Greenbrier, 6-2, 6-3 to advance too.
