By the time the two high school football games being played in Brevard County tonight are completed, there will be a clearer picture of the playoff race in Class 5A, District 12.
With Titusville’s 25-20 win at Palm Bay two weeks ago, the Terriers assured themselves of playing a role in determining the two postseason qualifiers. Should they win tonight, they will be in control.
Titusville, 4-1 overall, is 2-0 in District 12 games, and both wins came on the road. Tonight’s game at Merritt Island (4-2, 2-0) will offer another road challenge but also an opportunity. If the Terriers improve to 3-0, they’ll be alone in first place with only games against losing teams left in the district.
A Merritt Island win would put the Mustangs alone in first, but they still have to visit Palm Bay next week. The Pirates (4-1, 1-1) are ranked seventh in 5A by an Associated Press poll of state sports writers. Titusville entered the rankings this week at No. 9.
Despite losing its first five games, Astronaut (1-5, 1-1) could revive its season tonight by upsetting Palm Bay. With a win, Astronaut would be tied for second in the district. The Pirates, who have made 18 consecutive appearances in the FHSAA playoffs, need a win tonight to keep pace with the district leaders. They also can improve to 2-1.
