Two Union Catholic boys basketball players injured in car accident

By

Two prominent members of the Union Catholic High School boys basketball team have been hospitalized because of injuries suffered in a car accident Friday night.

According to the team’s Twitter account @UCvikings, the players are senior guard Ashton Lofton and senior forward David Hawthorne.

“Keep Ashton Lofton and David Hawthorne in your prays (sic),” the account posted Saturday afternoon.

Archdiocese of Newark spokesman Jim Goodness acknowledged the accident, but declined to give details.

“We are aware there was an accident that involves some students at the school who are with the basketball team,” Goodness said via phone. “I can’t give details at this point.”

The Vikings are having one of their best seasons in recent memory. They improved to 10-2 after beating Rahway 78-47 at home Friday. Lofton recorded eight points and eight assists in the game, while Hawthorne posted 12 points, four rebounds and four steals.

Both are starters on a team projected to win the Union County Conference’s Mountain Division.
