The Jim Mora recruiting train continues to roll along, even after a heartbreaking loss.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times and Bruin Report Online, Windward School tight end Breland Brandt, a Los Angeles native who is ranked as one of the nation’s top defensive end and overall prospects in the Class of 2016, committed to the Bruins on Sunday. The pledge followed a family discussion with Brandt deciding not to put off a decision he felt was inevitable.
“I just talked to Coach Mora and Coach Ulbrich, I’m a Bruin,” Brandt told Bruins Report Online. “I know it’s early but there was no reason for me to put this off when I knew where I wanted to go. I’ve liked UCLA for a long time and after talking to my family, the timing just felt right.
“The biggest thing for me was feeling at home at UCLA and when I took football out of the equation, I asked myself, where would I want to be and where would I be comfortable and that was definitely at UCLA. You’re always an injury away from not playing and at UCLA, with the degree and the location, it was just the best overall fit.”
There’s little question that Brandt will be a fit for much of what Jim Mora Jr.’s program does, with former Bruin turned Vikings rookie Anthony Barr mentioned as a likely reference point. Brandt currently stands 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, but he has room to grow on his sizable frame, and that could mean plays at defensive end, linebacker and possibly even at tight end, where he lines up on offense for Windward.
Of course, there’s still plenty of time for Brandt to change his mind, though he insists that isn’t in the cards.
