Union County takes lead in state wrestling


Union County High School placed 10 of its 14 wrestlers in the quarterfinals to take the lead after the first day of the State Wrestling Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena in Lexington.

The Braves finished with 77.5 points. Campbell County is second with 67 points, followed by 2013 state champion St. Xavier (66.5), Fern Creek (61.5), Trinity (52) and Oldham County (48).

Wrestling will resume at 9:30 a.m. today, with the championship matches set for approximately 6 p.m.

Among the Union County team members reaching the quarterfinals was senior Brock Ervin, who is trying to become the first wrestler from Kentucky ever to win five state championships at the high school level.

St. X had seven wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals, including top-ranked brothers Justin Lampe (152 pounds) and Dominic Lampe (160).

Fern Creek has five wrestlers in the quarterfinal, including Jorge Vega. He is considered a top contender at 113 pounds.

Trinity had seven wrestlers reach the quarterfinals, including top-ranked sophomore Tyler Frankrone at 182 pounds.

Oldham County has three wrestlers in the quarterfinals.
