The Cathedral City High School girls soccer team rallied from a first-half deficit to earn a 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Patriot in the Heritage tournament in Sun City on Friday.
Down 1-0, the Lions evened the game on a late goal in the first half by Cynthia Hernandez. Then in the first minute of the second half Azalea Guanajuato scored to give the Lions the final margin.
Cathedral City (5-1) plays in the semifinals of the tournament Saturday.
Rancho Mirage 6, Pomona Catholic 0: Cindy Martinez scored twice to lift the Rattlers in the Linfield Christian tournament.
Katalina Valenzuela, Fernanda Mercado, Kenya Cordero and Melina Flores also scored for Rancho Mirage. Jasmin Sterling and Jasmin Delgado combined to secure the shutout in goal.
On Thursday, Sterling had a standout performance with 12 saves in a 4-1 loss to Linfield Christian.
Rancho Mirage (3-5-1) continues tournament play Saturday.
Palm Springs 3, Desert Hot Springs 1: The Indians won on the road behind goals from Hennesy Pena, Annie Muller and Nicole Graham.
Erika Fuentes added an assist while Carisa Bucera finished with six saves in goal for Palm Springs (1-0-2), which hosts Beaumont at 3 p.m. Monday.
Notre Vista 4, Coachella Valley 3: The Arabs came up just short in the Heritage tournament.
Alexis Garcia, Leslie Morales and Vicky Vasquez each scored for Coachella Valley, while Meliisa Bermudez added an assist.
The Arabs (4-3) continue tournament play Saturday.
Palm Springs 60, Santiago 48: The Indians had three players score in double figures in a victory in the Artesia tournament.
Ricky Wright had a game-high 25 points while Deondre Hawkins scored 21. Josh Rich added 11 points for Palm Springs (3-1), which faces Claremont in the fifth place game Saturday.
Shadow Hills 44, Kofa 40: San Roby scored 12 points and Brock Greer added 11 as the Knights improved to 4-2 with a victory in the Imperial Classic.
Maverick Stansberry added eight points for Shadow Hills, which continues tournament play against Calipatria at noon on Saturday.
Desert Mirage 63, Coachella Valley 58: In a back-and-forth contest, the Rams converted four late free throws to seal the victory at home.
Martin Armenta finished with 19 points, four assists and four steals while Rigo Guzman recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.
Rogelio Montoya added nine points and nine rebounds for Desert Mirage (3-2), which hosts Desert Hot Springs at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Palo Verde 46, Desert Christian Academy 33: Rich Swiss scored 21 points but the Conquerors came up short in the Rancho Mirage tournament.
Jonathan Scott added six points and 10 rebounds for Desert Christian Academy, which faces Banning at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rancho Mirage High School.
Indio 43, Southwest 35: At the Brawley tournament, three players scored in double figures as the Rajahs improved to 5-1.
Dneesya Baxter led with 13 points while Kelcey Beckham scored 12. Jazmyne Santiel added 11 points for Indio, which continues tournament play Saturday.
Palo Verde 46, Desert Christian Academy 31: Kaylee Espinoza paced the Conquerors in the loss with 15 points.
Abby Wagner added seven points for Desert Christian Academy, which visits Desert Chapel on Tuesday.
Cypress 74, COD 30: The Roadrunners had trouble against the sixth-ranked team in California as Ruby Carrillo led COD with 16 points in the L.A. Valley tournament.
The Roadrunners continue tournament play Saturday.
Girls’ water polo
Palm Desert: The Aztecs won twice on Friday, defeating Centennial (9-1) and J.W. North (8-5).
Sarah Nichols led Palm Desert with three goals against Centennial while Elise Stein and Cassie Bija scored two goals apiece.
Ryan Hudson and Meagan Sawyer also contributed to the scoring. Savannah Clyde (five saves) and Alissa Clyde (three saves) stood out defensively.
Against J.W. North, Nichols finished with four goals while Stein scored twice. Samantha Sandoval and Samantha Stein also scored while Savannah Clyde recorded five saves.
