Despite losing long-tenured coach Jack Stewart to retirement last season, the Palm Desert High School girls golf team continued their winning tradition, defeating La Quinta 195-216 on Thursday at the Indian Wells Resort to clinch their 16th consecutive undefeated (12-0) Desert Valley League title.
Stewart led the Aztecs to 15 consecutive undefeated DVL championships before current head coach Kurt Ney took over the team.
“Those are big shoes to fill taking over for Jack so I was a little nervous,” Ney said. “The girls performed wonderfully and we’ve had an unbelievable season so far.”
Palm Desert standout Jiyoon Jang fired a 33 on the par-37 course while Madison Rincon shot a career-best 34. They were followed by Kiki Liu (39), Madison Walker (42) and Sophia Zepeda (47).
“The whole team came focused and ready to play and took care of business,” Ney said.
The Blackhawks were led by Kaitlyn Ellis (40) and Bethany Bullers (41). Shelby Bullers (44), Mariah Moon (46) and Nadia Herrera (47) also contributed for La Quinta, which finished second in DVL at 10-2.
DVL individuals take place Tuesday and Thursday at Desert Willow. Tuesday’s tee time begins at 12:05 p.m. The top eight golfers will advance to CIF.
Shadow Hills 298, Desert Hot Springs 349: At Tahquitz Creek, Melanie Cota shot a 47 as the Knights broke 300 for the first time in school history in their De Anza League finale.
Alexus Avila added a 54 for Shadow Hills, which finished second (6-2) in the De Anza League behind Big Bear.
Reagan Risk (64) and Nadia Teutle (66) also contributed for the Knights, who compete in the De Anza League prelims on Tuesday in Big Bear.
Coachella Valley 280, Indio 334: At Indian Palms Country Club, Annika Arrieta shot a 45 as the Arabs beat the Rajahs.
Jazmin Huante (51), Kalina Ortega (53), Kimberly Bravo (68), and Delilah Naranjo (69) also contributed for Coachella Valley.
Alexyah Duran and Aleena Duran led Indio with rounds of 65 apiece.
Cathedral City 3, Indio 0: The Lions swept the Rajahs 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 at home as Mary Pientka led with seven kills and five aces.
Alyssa Carlson contributed 19 assists and three aces while Oselia Salas added four kills. Yoshi Figueroa finished with six digs for Cathedral City (3-12, 3-4 in DVL).
Tajah Brown led Indio with six kills and five aces while Edza Gomez added 11 digs.
The Lions host Coachella Valley at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Xavier Prep 3, Coachella Valley 0: Alix Dreier and Anissa Bautista had seven kills apiece to lead the Saints to a 25-8, 25-15, 25-9 sweep over the Arabs.
Dreier added four aces while Michelle Cullen tallied five kills and four aces for Xavier Prep, which finished with 21 aces.
The Saints (6-5, 4-2) visit Palm Desert on Tuesday.
West Shores 3, San Jacinto Valley Academy 0: Esmerelda Manriquez had 20 kills as the Wildcats swept at home 25-10, 25-8, 25-11.
Dixie Sutherland also played well for West Shores, which improved to 20-0 overall (5-0 in Conference).
The Wildcats host Noli Indian at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
Desert Christian Academy 3, Bloomington Christian 0: Grace Johnson and Olivia Hoddick had nine kills apiece to lift the Conquerors to a 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 sweep on the road.
Abby Wagner added six aces for Desert Christian Academy (8-4, 7-2), which hosts Joshua Springs at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Boys’ water polo
Palm Desert 18, Cathedral City 6: The Aztecs bounced back from Tuesday’s loss with a victory over the Lions.
Marco Picasso led Cathedral City with five goals while Blake Gonzalez also scored. Omar Suarez had 10 saves in goal for the Lions.
No information was reported from Palm Desert.
La Quinta 18, Indio 1: Spencer Lowell had four goals as the Blackhawks beat Indio to improve to 2-1 in DVL play.
Justin Hop scored three goals while Tanner Mitchell and Sam King added two goals apiece for La Quinta, which competes in the Diamondbar tournament Friday and Saturday.
