Vestal’s boys erased a seven-point, third-quarter deficit and knocked off visiting Union-Endicott, 53-50 in Southern Tier Athletic Conference basketball Tuesday night.
With Joe D’Esti contributing eight of his 14-point total, the Golden Bears outscored U-E by 18-11 in the final quarter to wrap up a fourth victory in as many games this season. The Tigers dropped to 2-1.
D’Esti added 10 rebounds and blocked six shots, and teammate Elijah Mushalla had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the winners before a hearty assemblage of spectators.
Matt Bowman and Tom Pasquale teamed for 38 U-E points, the former exclusively around the rim and the latter with aid of all of his team’s four three-point goals.
Vestal will look to make it a 5-0 getaway Friday night at Horseheads.
JC 67, CF 57: At Chenango Forks, full-court pressure was the root of Johnson City’s rally from a five-point deficit to begin fourth-quarter play.
Nick Chilson scored 12 of his team-high 20 points in the final quarter, that take including Johnson City’s lone three-point success of the night. Dominic Nadz added 17 for the Wildcats.
Rob Story’s 21 points topped Forks, and teammate Trevor Borchardt added 12.
Maine-Endwell 58, Corning 47: At M-E, Michael Palmer scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Spartans to a STAC victory. Drew Gallagher and Brandon Wanchisen added 12 points apiece for M-E (1-1).
Chenango Valley 58, Susquehanna Valley 45: At Chenango Valley, Mark Mullins tallied 15 points and nine rebounds and Kolby Ross added 14 points as the Warriors improved to 4-0.
Ross had half his scoring output in the fourth quarter, helping CV to a 21-12 advantage in the frame. CV led 18-6 after the first quarter with Brian Cox nailing three three-pointers before SV worked its way back into the game.
David Matthews had 23 points to pace the Sabers.
Whitney Point 69, Dryden 51:At Whitney Point, Gabe Shrauger’s 20-point, 14-rebound outing led the Golden Eagles, who held a 23-point halftime advantage in the IAC contest.
“Our defense was really good and we shot the ball well— good combination,” said coach Steve Morgan, whose Eagles made good on 27 of 53 attempts from the floor and a healthy percentage from beyond the arc.
Brady Harrington had four of the winners’ eight three-point goals, and Zach Marsh added seven assists to his nine points.
Tioga 52, Candor 38:At Candor, the Tigers’ bigger bodies were too much for the home team on the interior. Josh Kithcart scored 18 and John Dougherty 12 as the top 1-2 for Tioga.
Union-Endicott 39, Vestal 36: At U-E, with the match tied at 36, the Tigers’ Rick Chastine recorded a 9-6 decision over Vestal sophomore John Adams at 113 pounds to clinch the STAC Metro division victory.
Other key U-E victories were Tristan Martin’s 7-5 win over Max Kilmer at 145 pounds and Jacob Broder’s pin of Britton Shaw at 285 pounds.
Norwich 43, Windsor 39: At Windsor, Trey Muserallo’s match-opening victory at 170 pounds proved key for the Purple Tornado. Muserallo broke a tie with a late takedown of Gabe Zakrajsek and scored a 6-4 triumph.
Whitney Point 48, Dryden 46: At Dryden, Jessica Cafferty hit a winning layup as the buzzer sounded to lead the Golden Eagles to an Interscholastic Athletic Conferenc victory. Cafferty finished with a game-high 24 points and teammate Brittany Randall added 16 points for WP.
