STAUNTON – The Stuart Hall Dragons won the VACA Central District volleyball title last year, and second-year coach Meghan Munsey wants to build on that success.
Although the Dragons lost five seniors, four returning veterans along with five newcomers, most up from the jayvees, form this year’s squad.
“They work hard in practice and have a great positive attitude,” Munsey said.
The Dragons have several strong attributes this year, including a returning veteran setter and good middle blockers.
“All around, we should do very well,” the Dragons coach said.
Munsey thinks her biggest task at this point of the season is blending the four veterans with the five newcomers.
“I’m trying to get them to click with each other,” she said. “We are really working hard on our defense. But with the work put in, the program is in the right direction.”
The Dragons will look to four-year senior setter Addison Philpott for leadership. Her experience at that position is a big positive for the team.
“She is a really vocal leader on the court,” Munsey said. “Her teammates look to her for encouragement and she knows her players on the court.”
Meanwhile, senior Emma Nelson will provide strength in the middle of the front line with her blocking and hitting.
“She has improved so much,” Munsey said. “She put in time in the offseason.”
Two outside hitters, junior Sarah Nordstrom and senior Hannah Coyner, are both returners to the team.
The Dragons also expect playing time from junior Camille Horton.
“She did good things for the jayvee team last year,” Munsey said. “We’re looking for her to step up.”
Junior Allison McIntyre, who is up from the jayvees, and senior returner Natysha Carter will be looked to for their defense.
“They both work hard in practice and should be a big part of our success,” Munsey said.
Sophomore Caroline Eastham, up from the jayvees, is the team’s backup setter. “She’s doing a great job in practice as our second setter,” Munsey said.
Adding depth will be senior Calla Cline, a first-year player, at a defensive position.
Munsey has set as the team’s first goal to win the district.
“We are taking it one step at a time,” she said.
