The 2014 City of Palms Classic is underway, and it didn’t take long for the unbelievable highlights to get rolling.
In a game between Philadelphia-area power Archbishop John Carroll and Sierra Canyon from near L.A., Carroll star Derrick Jones — a UNLV commit and consensus top-50 prospect in the Class of 2015 — collected a loose ball near the periphery and took off toward the hoop. When he got there, he met Cody Riley, a star in his own right (though only a sophomore).
Riley never had a chance. Jones took off from the edge of the key, leapt directly above Riley and threw down a forceful slam on top of him at the rim. It was an absolutely monster poster jam.
Sierra Canyon won the game 59-55, largely thanks to Riley’s impressive overall performance (22 pts, 9 rebounds! From a sophomore! At City of Palms!) Still, no one will forget that he ended up on the wrong side of one massive slam anytime soon.
