VIERA – The Viera High football team was upset about having last week’s home opener against Satellite postponed. They took that frustration out on the Cocoa Beach Minutemen to the tune of a 64-0 victory on Friday night in Viera.
After failing to score on their opening drive and having a punt return for a touchdown called back for a penalty, the Hawks would go on to score three touchdowns in the span of less than five minutes and set the tone for the rest of the game.
A three play, 62-yard drive was capped off by a 26-yard touchdown pass from Hayden Kingston to Tre Nixon. On the ensuing Cocoa Beach possession, an errant snap to Minutemen quarterback David Demeter went into the end zone and was recovered by Hunter Vattes-Dixon for six points.
Viera then had great field position as Cocoa Beach could not convert a fake punt deep in their own territory and the Hawks took advantage as Kingston found Tre Nixon again on a 34-yard score.
The Minutemen were blanked for the third straight game as they were held to just 29 yards of offense, including minus 19 yards rushing, by the stout Viera defense. Along with the shutout, the Hawks’ defense recorded a second touchdown on an interception by Jay Boyd in the third quarter and a safety.
• KEY PLAYERS: Three of Tre Nixon’s four catches were for touchdowns as he had 112 receiving yards. Kingston was 10-of-11 with 177 yards passing and four touchdowns.
Zach Blanch led Viera’s ground game as he ran for 76 yards on six carries, including a 51-yard touchdown.
• THEY SAID IT: “We wanted to come out tonight and execute some things and we did a pretty good job,” Viera head coach Kevin Mays said.
“That’s the game that we’ve starred,” Mays said of the Hawks’ district opener next week against Sebastian River.
“These other games are almost bragging-rights type games. The real games are district games and we’ll see what happens next week.”
• WHAT’S NEXT: Viera will be at home against the Sharks to open up Class 7A, District 12 play. Cocoa Beach will travel to Space Coast to begin the Class 4A, District 5 portion of their schedule.
• RECORDS: Viera 2-0, Cocoa Beach 0-3.
