Joseph Gutierrez pitched five strong innings and had three hits and three RBI to help the North Salinas baseball team top Alvarez 6-2 on Wednesday in a Monterey Bay League Pacific Division game at Alvarez.
North Salinas, which hasn’t had a winning league record since 1990 (7-5), went to 3-0 in league. Alvarez is 2-1.
The Vikings are tied for first with Watsonville.
The score was tied 2-2 after five innings. In the sixth, North Salinas broke the tie when Justyn Gutierrez walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an infield single by his younger brother, Joseph.
North High added three more runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Jake Dillard and Isaiah Mendez and a sacrifice fly from Kevin Trotter.
Paul Salinas had two hits for Alvarez, and Gonzola Rocha had a two-run double in the fifth inning.
North Salinas doesn’t play again until Wednesday at North County. Alvarez is at Seaside Friday.
–Stevenson 8, Gonzales 1: At Gonzales, Galen Manhard tossed a two-hitter with eight strikeouts as the Pirates beat the Spartans in an MTAL game.
Gonzales scored an unearned run in the last inning.
Stevenson went to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in league. Gonzales is 0-5, 0-3.
Chandler Blum had two hits and two RBI, Nick Chancellor had two hits, including a double, and Brad Powers had a pair of singles.
Stevenson hosts Gonzales on Friday.
–North County 16, Trinity 1: At North County, the Condors won their second straight to improve their non-league record to 3-5.
Jon Vargas singled, homered and drove in four runs, Brock Bueno had three hits and four RBI, John Roberts had three hits and three RBI, while Kyle Romanolo, Jordan Graves and McCormick McClellan had two hits each.
McClellan pitched four of the five innings to get the win.
North County plays at Watsonville on Friday at 7 p.m.
–Carmel 5, King City 1: At King City, Kevin Nolan tossed six innings and gave up just one unearned run as the Padres stayed unbeaten in the MTAL at 3-0.
King City is 2-4 overall, 0-3 in league.
Lennie Rodriguez had three hits for the Padres, Robby Treadwell had two hits and two RBI, and Andres Enriquez had three hits.
The two teams play Friday in Carmel.
–Alisal 7, Seaside 3: At Alisal, the Trojans got by the Spartans for their first divisional win this season.
Lorenzo Novoa was the winning pitcher, striking out seven.
J.C. Maravillo had three hits, while Carlos Vera and Jose Ibarra each had two hits.
Alisal (3-3, 1-3 MBL Pacific) entertains Pajaro Valley on Friday.
–Soledad 13, Greenfield 1: At Soledad, the Aztecs remained undefeated as they won their MTAL opener over the Bruins.
Soledad improved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the MTAL.
Andrew Sanchez threw a four-hitter, striking out five.
Josh Ramirez hit a two-run home run as part of a two-hit, three-RBI day. Nathaniel Villarreal went 2 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI. Louie Medina, Daniel Farfan and Chris Vasquez each had two hits in Soledad’s win.
J.J. Rodriguez had two hits for Greenfield, and Aaron Ruiz pitched 4.1 innings.
The two teams play each other again Friday at Greenfield.
–Seaside 7, North Monterey County 2: At Seaside, the Spartans got rolling in the middle innings and went on to defeat the Condors in a non-league contest.
Seaside scored three in the third and three in the fourth.
Stephanie Lazarade went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Jasmine Aten went 3 for 4 with a double and four runs batted in.
Seaside (3-6) plays host to Marina on Friday before beginning MBL Gabilan Division play next week.
–Alvarez 10, St. Francis Central Coast Catholic 4: At Alvarez, the Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating the Sharks.
Viviana Soria and Mona Garibay each went 2 for 3 and combined for four RBIs. Kylie Magnuson was the winning pitcher.
Alvarez (3-5) faces Salinas today.
–Monte Vista Christian 1, Redwood Christian 0: At Monte Vista Christian, Mara Arroyo’s hit to score Kim Rule made the difference.
The winning run came in the sixth, when Arroyo hit a double. Monte Vista Christian had only three hits.
The win boosted Monte Vista Christian to 7-1 this season.
–Gonzales 5, Soledad 0: At Gonzales on Tuesday, Natalie Basaldua threw a shutout with seven strikeouts.She also tripled and batted in three runs. Katrina Diaz and Jannel Gill also knocked in a run apiece.
–Carmel 14, Palma 8: At Carmel, the Padres scored eight in the second half to get past the Chieftains.
Colin Empey scored four goals and had three assists, and Cole Kennedy had a goal and two assists.
Carmel (2-2) travels to Stevenson on Monday.
–Salinas 112, Seaside 56: At Salinas, the Cowboys won all but two events in getting the win over the Spartans.
Salinas’ Sydney Clark won the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly, qualifying for CCS.
–Salinas 136, Seaside 23: At Salinas, the Cowboys had two double winners in a team win over Seaside.
Nic Clark won the 200-yard intermediate and 100-yard freestyle. Chad Premo won the 50-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.
Nat Hunsdorfer took first in the 200-yard freestyle.
