The Vipers Elite, made up exclusively of girls from the Western North Carolina Area, traveled to Chattanooga, TN this weekend to participate in the 2014 ASA Fall Eastern Elite Showcase. Forty-four elite teams from throughout the Southeast participated in the three-day event at the Summit of Softball Facility and Warner Park. The Vipers were one of only two teams in the 16A Division to finish the Showcase undefeated, with the only blemish being a 2-2 tie against the Alabama Stampede, the only other unbeaten team.
The Vipers were led in the circle by Jaiden Tweed (Owen High freshman) who finished with two wins, a save, and a tie on the weekend, averaging 1.5 strikeouts per inning. At the plate, four girls hit over .300 on the weekend: Caitlyn Ledford (Owen High freshman) – with a .625 average – Maitland Moore (AC Reynolds freshman), Claudia Crowe (Smoky Mountain junior), and Jaiden Tweed. Tweed and Moore also homered in the event, while Natalie Stewart (Owen sophomore) was robbed of a home run with a catch over the collapsable fence. Stewart also had a .500 on-base %. Jordan Hawk (Draughn High freshman), Ledford, and Tweed led the team in RBI.
Ashley Valencia (Owen freshman) and Sam Steed (East Rutherford freshman) combined to throw out 50% of baserunners from behind the plate. Emily Allred (East Rutherford freshman) picked up a victory in the circle, yielding no earned runs and Savannah Rice (North Buncombe Middle School) shined by surrendering only two runs in a Final Four Bracket game.
