This is really just the beginning for Haldane’s Kelly Vahos.
The 6-foot-2 outside hitter was named a finalist for PrepVolleyball.com’s National High School Junior of the Year award, one of 35 selected by the site. Vahos was named MVP of the Class D state tournament after leading the Blue Devils to their second state title in three years in November.
As she continues to grow, so does her game. Vahos, who was named one of LoHud’s “Athletes to Watch in 2014,” has evolved from a dominant middle blocker to a just-as-dominant outside hitter, and is also among one of the best passers and defenders in the section. The junior has already garnered interest from more than 40 Division I programs, a number that is only expected to increase after this year’s club season.
Vahos, a first-team all-state selection this season, was selected to PrepVolleyball.com’s “Frosh 59” and “Soph 79” lists in previous years, but this is the first time she has been a finalist for national player of the year honors.
The winner will be announced by the end of the month.
