Vote for Decatur senior battling terminal cancer

Dom Cooks, a senior at Decatur High School in Federal Way who is battling a terminal brain tumor, is a finalist for the 2014 Army National Guard Most Inspirational Athlete, which is a fan-driven contest.

Cooks played basketball and football before the tumor took him off the field. Although he can no longer play, Cooks has stayed optimistic and still shows up at games to cheer on his team.

He was named homecoming king last fall and was allowed to score a ceremonial touchdown.

A special graduation ceremonywas held for Cooks at Decatur in February because doctors are not sure if he will make it to graduate with the rest of his class in June. But, Dom says he is determined to defeat his cancer.

Cooks has made it through the first two rounds of voting and is now in the Top 10 of the Most Inspirational Athlete contest. Dom almost did not make it into the finals, but a spokesperson for the Federal Way School District said another contestant withdrew because he was inspired by Cooks’ story and wanted him to advance.

The final round starts Thursday and goes through April 14, with voting available online.

The winner of the award will get a feature article on them published on USA TODAY High School Sports, a trophy that will be presented at his school and a $1,000 to the school s athletic department.
